About
Welcome to the Forest Canopy Blog!
This Blog wants to inform about the world’s forest canopies, their importance at global and local level and approaches to enhance their value through various approaches of sustainable use. Because tropical forest are most threatened by deforestation the blog mainly focuses on tropical regions. Temperate forests, however, are also taken into account as there are possibilities to explore their canopies, too.
My name is Markus Seibel, I am the author of this blog. I am a geographer, who graduated from Humboldt-University of Berlin, Germany and I work as a researcher and consultant for eco- and forest canopy tourism. I conducted several projects on canopy tourism, e.g. for the Global Canopy Programme (GCP). The guiding principle of my work and research is to find ways to sustainably use resources by focusing on ecotourism as a tool for poverty alleviation and biodiversity conservation, as well as socially and environmentally responsible tourism practices.
So far, my research focused on the potential of canopy tourism to contribute to conservation and poverty alleviation. For the last three years I have been working on PhD project - an actor-oriented political ecology analysis on tropical forest tourism. Beside doing research, I continue working as a consultant for eco- and canopy tourism.
